Catalans v Warrington: Saturday Night Preview

03 August 2019

Which Catalans team will turn up this week? Nobody knows; 12 wins from 23 games, the Dragons sit in sixth in the Super League table after a mere two victories in eight fixtures following a previous six wins from seven.

Warrington, meanwhile, sit in second but have faltered of late in the league, winning two from six yet find themselves in the Challenge Cup Final for the third time in four years. The Wolves have fared well in the south of France in recent years, winning three of their last six which is no easy feat in the heat and ferocity of a partisan Stade Gilbert Brutus crowd.

The Dragons ended both St Helens and Warrington’s winning runs in round nine and four respectively, outlining their credentials, and may well be facing a Warrington side at the perfect time given the latter’s celebratory week.

Sitaleki Akauola returns from suspension for the Wolves whilst Greg Bird, Samisoni Langi and Kenny Edwards are back in the squad for Catalans, replacing Matty Smith, Benjamin Jullien and Lucas Albert.

With home advantage under their belt and Warrington’s successful passage in the Challenge Cup, Catalans will look to bring the Cheshire club back down to earth with a bump.

Steve Price has come in for some criticism in recent weeks from Warrington fans, but he weathered that storm to triumph in the cup. However, it will take a lot for Price to motivate his side following such a high, but that’s what coaches are paid for and it will be interesting to see whether his side can arrest their league slump.
