Warrington Wolves CEO Karl Fitzpatrick believes it will be “total bullshit” if Wigan Warriors aren’t named as the 2024 BBC Sports Team of the Year.

This year Wigan won a historic quadruple of trophies, beating Penrith in the World Club Challenge before taking out the Challenge Cup, League Leader’s Shield and Super League grand final.

The BBC awards will be announced on December 17 and the shortlist for Sports Personality of the Year has already been announced in footballer Jude Bellingham, runner Keely Hodgkinson, darts player Luke Littler, cricketer Joe Root, Para-cyclist Sarah Storey and triathlete Alex Yee.

Wigan players Bevan French, Liam Farrell and Harry Smith were all overlooked.

Only two rugby league sides have ever won the Team award before – Wigan in 1994 and St Helens in 1996.

A shortlist for Team of the Year has yet to be revealed but Fitzpatrick says the Warriors should be certainties because of their achievements.

“If Wigan don’t win team of the year it’s an absolute travesty,” he told Everything Rugby League.

“They’ve won every single trophy, world champions – they’ve done the lot. They should win it. I think it’s total bullshit if they don’t.

“I think what Wigan have done in a salary capped sport as well, I think that makes it extra special.

“They beat Penrith in the World Club Challenge who have a significantly bigger salary cap than clubs in England, from a Super League perspective it would be superb if they win it. Who else is there?”

Wigan coach Matty Peet could also be in the running for Coach of the Year after the Warriors’ stellar season.

There are also gongs given out for World Sport Star of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Unsung Hero and the Helen Rollason Award as part of the BBC ceremony.

Asked about the BBC awards, Wigan CEO Kris Radlinksi told Everything Rugby League: “It’s an institution isn’t it? Everyone’s grown up watching it and I’m sure they would have been across what we’ve achieved.

“Who knows? We’re in the mix I think – They’ve not announced it, but you have a look at other teams’ success and I think we’ve done pretty well. So you never know.”

Asked about the likes of French being overlooked for Sports Personality of the Year, Radlinski said: “There’s not much we can say about that.

“There’s a lot of high-profile sports in the country and we’re lucky we’ve got some outstanding talents.

“We strive to get that recognition, but I won’t be sat there thinking Bevan should be on there, that’s where we are in the food chain at this point in time.”
