James Maloney has just about done it all in professional Rugby League.

He has won premierships in the NRL, won State of Origin with New South Wales and has represented Australia.

The 35-year-old travelled to France in 2020 after signing with Super League club the Catalans Dragons and looked to lead the club to a level of success that they had never been to before.

In 2021, this was arguably achieved as the Dragons won the League Leaders Shield for finishing at the top of the Super League table at the end of the regular season and made the grand final where they came close to beating the St Helens juggernaut that has been the benchmark in English Rugby League since 2019.

Maloney will forever be seen as a Catalans club legend for what he was able to contribute to the side that season.

It was believed that the half would hang up his boots at the end of 2021 and he did leave the Dragons and Super League but decided to sign for French Elite One club FC Lezignan.

The club currently sits in third place on the league table but could be about to cop a huge blow as their star man Maloney is believed to have tested positive for a banned recreational drug.

Écrit Par Nicolas of Treize Mondial reported the news overnight.

“The information was sent to us at the beginning of the week, it is confirmed today,” said Nicolas.

“James Maloney, announced injured by the FC Lézignan club, would in fact be suspended following a positive doping control for a recreational substance.”

It is unknown which substance Maloney has tested positive for but Treize Mondial is also reporting that he will be suspended for the rest of the Elite One season with his future at FC Lezignan largely unknown at this point.

For now, FC Lezignan must push forward without their main man as they take on the fifth-placed Avignon tomorrow in a game that would see the club go level on points with Limouxin who are currently in second on the Elite One table if they win.
