Castleford interim coach Andy Last insists the under-pressure Tigers will turn their dire season around but must stick together.
Castleford have yet to win a game in 2023, with four losses from four matches, and went down 36-6 to Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Coach Lee Radford stepped down in a shock exit on Monday, with Last handed the reins, and outside back Jake Mamo is expected to also depart.
The Tigers also suffered a scandal before round one when a video of Joe Westerman performing a sex act outside a Gregg’s went viral.
The west Yorkshire club have scored just one try in their past 160 minutes and now sit second from bottom of the Super League ladder with zero points, the same as Wakefield.
However, Last claims his team will improve.
“Our fans will be disappointed, they deserve better than what they saw tonight,” he said.
“But we will be working hard. I’ve got confidence in these players. We’ll get out of it, we will get better.
“The team are low on confidence, that was evident tonight. Unfortunately we came up with some poor decision on last tackle players, on trying to offload the ball.
“Huddersfield did what we expected them to do, we just weren’t able to get into the groove of the game.
“A key moment was a forced offload in that first half which really, really hurt us. You can’t afford to miss one on one tackles at this level.
“It’s really disappointing, I’m gutted for the boys.”
The Tigers face local rivals Leeds Rhinos at the Jungle next, and Last says it is vital his under-pressure side stick together.
“The guys are already low on confidence,” he said.
“We can’t hit them over the head too much. But the players know they have to better, they know they have to work harder.
“But we have to stick together. Leeds is a big game. Cas have a good history against Leeds and brings out the passion from both sets of fans.
“Leeds will be full of confidence and they’ve got some quality players. But we have to focus on us.”
Castleford will face the Rhinos without Alex Sutcliffe after the centre picked up a concussion against the Giants.
