There were convincing victories for St Helens, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves and Hull FC in Round Two of the Betfred Super League and all were helped by some key performances from England Rugby League World Cup hopefuls.

Following a disappointing opening to the season, Warrington earned their first win with a dominant 44-12 triumph against Leigh Centurions on Friday afternoon.

Back-rower Ben Currie was in sensational form scoring a try, providing two try-assists whilst also running for 125 metres from his 14 carries. Currie featured in all six of England’s outings at the most recent Rugby League World Cup in 2017.

Gareth Widdop, Tom Lineham and Toby King – who was introduced to the England Senior squad last year – all grabbed braces for the Wire. King and Widdop also turned provider with the centre notching one try-assist while the former St George Illawarra Dragons halfback came away with two.

Daryl Clark, Jack Hughes, Mike Cooper, Stefan Ratchford, Josh Charnley and Joe Philbin also featured for Steve Price’s side.

Wigan were big winners on Thursday evening as they toppled Wakefield Trinity 34-6 at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Jake Bibby was the star of the show as he scored a hat-trick for the Warriors, with his first two efforts coming in acrobatic fashion at a crucial time in the game for Adrian Lam’s side. Bibby will be hoping five tries in his first two Betfred Super League outings of 2021 have put him in Shaun Wane’s thoughts.

Fullback Zak Hardaker made it two tries in two appearances as he was in support following Liam Farrell’s break from inside his own half. Unfortunately, Trinity winger Tom Johnstone had to leave the field early due to injury.

England Youth star and St Helens’ 2020 Betfred Super League Grand Final winning hero Jack Welsby was a thorn in Hull Kingston Rovers’ side in the second of Thursday evening’s games as he scored a try and claimed a try-assist. Jonny Lomax was also set up a try while Tommy Makinson couldn’t find the try-line but did successfully kick four goals in a convincing 0-25 win for the current champions.

Hull FC’s impressive start to the season under the new stewardship of Brett Hodgson continued as the Airlie Birds dismantled Salford Red Devils 4-35 on Saturday.

Jake Connor – who looks to have made the transition to fullback for 2021 – was integral to the victory providing assists for both Andre Savelio and Josh Reynolds’ first half efforts before going on to kick two goals and a drop-goal.

Niall Evalds has settled into life well at Castleford Tigers as he claimed his second try in as many appearances for Daryl Powell’s side in their 10-18 victory against West Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos. Evalds’ first half effort came thanks to some fancy footwork from halfback Jake Trueman.

Finally, Catalans Dragons rounded out the weekend with a 10-20 win over Huddersfield Giants on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons had two Englishman on the scoresheet with Mike McMeeken and Matt Whitley crossing.

Winger Tom Davies played a key role in McMeeken’s try while Sam Tomkins took his try-assist tally to three for the season.
