Reigning Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) champions Warrington Wolves will face an almighty challenge from Wakefield Trinity this Sunday (19 September) as they attempt to hold on to their PDRL Super League title in the Grand Final at York St John’s University.

The Wolves defeated Trinity to win the 2019 Grand Final and beat them narrowly again in 2021 to top the table for the regular season. Now Trinity will aim to turn the tables in front of the Our League cameras at 3pm.

PDRL returned in April 2021 following an enforced 18-months absence due to the pandemic. Six teams have taken part in the 2021 competition, which saw a new format introduced to ensure as much Covid-secure activity as possible.

The Grand Final is part of a double-header also featuring Warrington Wire and Leeds Rhinos, two sides looking to complete their PDRL comeback seasons on a high and begin building towards the 2022 World Cup. Warrington Wire versus Leeds Rhinos kicks off at 1.30pm.

Marc Lovering, RFL Director of Participation and Development, says: “It’s been wonderful to have PDRL back with us in 2021 and Grand Final day will have a terrific festival feel about it.

“2021 has also seen PDRL take significant strides forward, with the first PDRL Origin match and the game breaking new ground with its first ever ‘classification day’ for disability Rugby League, bringing governance of PDRL into line with Paralympic sport and international disability competition.

“A big ‘thank you’ then to everybody involved with PDRL this year and good luck to all the athletes competing for the final time in 2021 this Sunday.”

Spectators can enjoy all the action at York St John’s Haxby Road Campus for just £2 on the door (Under 16s and concessions free). 

York St John’s received more than a quarter of a million pounds from the RLWC2021 CreatedBy grant scheme towards a £1milion development at Haxby Broad, including the 3G pitch on which the final will be played. The campus is now a hub for Rugby League activity in the Minster city, offering all variations of the community game year-round access to training facilities.
