NRLW stars Charntay Poko and Amber Hall stole the show for Pt Chevalier as the central Auckland side overcame Manurewa 22-16 to win their first ever Farrelly Photos Women’s Premiership title.
Pt Chevalier hadn’t beaten Manurewa in their three previous encounters prior to Sunday’s decider at Jack Colvin Park, and had trailed 10-8 at half-time.
But back-to-back tries from Hall – who finished the day with three – and a brilliant second-half playmaking performance from Poko saw the Pirates to victory.
The Marlins scored first via Pahu Kani on 13 minutes before Pt Chevalier hit back with a pair of four-pointers to Va’anessa Molia-Fraser and Hall to take the lead.
It lasted only seconds though, with a Pirates knock on on the ensuing set gifting Manurewa with the field position which they turned into a Geneva Webber try.
Kere Matua converted for a 10-8 lead at the break.
Webber added a second three minutes into the second half and Matua converted to give their side an eight-point lead, but it was all down hill from there for the southern side.
First Poko produced a brilliant offload to send Hall over before the Brisbane Broncos’ star scored her third on the hour mark.
With the game tied at 16-16 inside the final 10 minutes, Poko again rose to the challenge, putting in a precision grubber for Hilda Peters to score a try which Poko then converted from in front of the posts.
