The Rugby Football League has welcomed Sport England’s 10 year vision to harness the power of sport and physical activity to transform lives and communities.

‘Uniting the Movement’ sets out Sport England’s strategic commitment to harness the power of sport – and tackle the multiple inequalities which mean many children and adults are inactive and miss out on the physical and mental health benefits of an active lifestyle and involvement in sport. Sport England will partner with a wide range of organisations including health bodies to deliver the new strategy.

The RFL is sharing details on the vision and strategy with all clubs and other stakeholders. In particular, how this aligns with and supports Rugby League’s work to make sure the sport is always as inclusive as possible at all levels and that the needs of Rugby League communities, especially economically disadvantaged communities, are met in terms of welcoming places to play, flexible playing offers and support for clubs, schools and volunteers.

RFL Chief Executive Ralph Rimmer says:

“The collaborative and insightful way that Sport England has developed this strategy puts the whole sector in a strong position to meet the challenge of the recovery of our communities from the pandemic, and to fulfil a central, powerful role in creating a healthier, happier and fairer society.

“The focus on inequality is fundamental. Inequality of access to facilities, activities, spaces, support, coaching and opportunity; with economic disadvantage in particular remaining a barrier to moving more, playing more, and deriving not only physical and mental wellbeing benefits from that – but also as we know in Rugby League – increased aspiration, attainment and social mobility.

“We have seen that even when sporting activity was reduced it was often to sports clubs and sports people that the nation looked for content and inspiration. Such is the central role that the whole sector can and should play in society; and the principle that this should benefit everyone has never been more important.”

Sport England believe that for too long, people with the most to gain from being active have been the least able to take part. Uniting the Movement sets out how sport can give people the opportunities they need now and in the future.
