Sunday 13th February will see a phased return to training for Scotland Rugby League’s Age Grade National Teams, the Under 16’s and U19’s Students all training.
Following a review of the 2021 programme, a number of changes have been made and 2022 will see the National Teams training out of Dalkeith Rugby Club.
The Scotland Students return to training having not taken to the field since June 2019 due to Covid ruling out any activity in 2020 and 2021. The Students will also have a new Head Coach moving into the 2022 season with Nathan Graham stepping down to concentrate on the Scotland Men’s World Cup campaign at the end of the year.
Assistant Coach Gary Smith will be stepping up to take the reigns which brings some continuity to the programme with Gary being involved since 2016. Replacing Gary as Assistant Coach will be Chris Hough who will bring a wealth of experience to the programme.
Gary had this to say about his appointment:
“I’m humbled and honored to be given the opportunity to become the head coach of the students squad taking over from Nathan Graham.”
“I have been assistant coach alongside Nathan since 2016 and he has played a huge part in my personal development as a coach. It’s an incredibly exciting time for Scotland Rugby league and the pathway we are creating.
“We have seen this recently with several young players making their full international debuts in the build up to the delayed world cup 2021. It’s been a difficult time for everyone these past two years, however I am excited to get the squad back together and welcome the new recruit’s.
“The hard work starts now in our build up to the first tournament in June, it’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase Scotland’s talent and develop our students strength and skills.”
