Hull KR coach Tony Smith says his players are hurting after their one-sided 38-10 loss to Wakefield but insists they will bounce back stronger.

The Robins could have taken a step close to Super League survival by defeating fellow relegation battlers Trinity, but were dominated by their opponents at KCOM Craven Park.

The defeat leaves them in 11th spot and on 18 points, the same as bottom-placed London, who they play in their final three matches.

Hull KR face Catalans next in Perpignan in a fortnight.

“These boys care and they’re hurting,” Smith said.

“When you care about something you go away, address it and come back stronger. I’ve got no doubt my boys will after this week.

“We will be OK. We’re a pretty positive mob and whilst we’re sitting in a position we don’t want to be in, we have been for the last three months.

“We’ve learnt to live with it and we’re doing what we can to get out of it. Some might say it didn’t work today and it didn’t.

“We weren’t where we needed to be and I’m responsible for that. We’ll come back bigger, better and stronger and fighting harder.”

Hull KR went behind 14-0 to Wakefield early, but fought back to be in the contest with the score 14-10 at half-time.

However, the home team could not score a single point in the second half and conceded four tries in the final 16 minutes.

The Robins made 18 errors during the match and struggled to complete their sets.

Despite this, Smith is staying calm and refused to blame his players for the 28-point loss.

“Some of them were trying too hard,” he said.

“But I’m not going to hang them out to try. They’ll learn from it. Nothing has much changed from the situation we were in yesterday.

“We wouldn’t have been out of the woods [in terms of relegation] if we won today. Nor are Wakey – they’re not done and dusted.

“If my team had of won today it would have been the same – business as usual. Get on with it and go and try and perform for the next match.

“If you perform it gives you a chance to win. Nothing’s changed from Saturday to today.”
