An in-form Wakefield took on the Salford Red Devils today in the last of the Super League round 7 fixtures. After a cup win last week Wakefield looked to continue their fine form, Salford looked to bounce back after a cup loss. Despite the second half fightback from Salford looking promising, Wakefield kept close and fought for the narrow victory

A quick passing start saw Tom Johnston and Jacob Miller link up nicely, Miller going straight behind the sticks after 8 minutes, with Jowitt adding the extras.

Forcing an error from the kick-off. Salford ran at the Trinity defence testing them before Rhys Williams breached the line over in the corner. The extras missed however keeping Wakefield in a 6-4 advantage.

There was some nice passing from both sides’ next sets, before Tom Johnstone broke the line for Wakefield down the left, getting over for his first try. Jowitt again added the extras.

Over the course of the next 10 minutes, Salford made 3 interchanges, attempting to change up the dynamic and get back into the game after going 12-4 down. This only made matters worse however as some quick counter passing saw Reece Lynne get over, further extending the Trinity lead. Jowitt then put his side 18-4 ahead with the kick, then with a minute to go, Johnstone cut through the Salford defence with ease, getting his second of the day. Jowitt again keeping up with his kicking ability. Half time 24-4.

Salford immediately piled on pressure at the start of the second half, forcing 2 GLDOs. After the second one some quick fire passing got the ball to Deon Cross who strolled over for Salford’s second try. Sneyd this time didn’t make an error from the kick (24-10).

Wakefield looked to further extend their lead, but unfortunately for them Ken Sio had other plans, Salford working the ball towards the danger man who got over, narrowing the Trinity lead. The kick was missed.

Trinity’s lead grew even narrower as Williams weaved through for his second with 20 minutes to go, after the drop out, he darted through the left wing and dived over. The kick again was not converted.

Going 3 tries down without reply, Wakefield put the burners on. Mason Lino passed well and on the 5th tackle he put a kick up in towards Pitts who latched on to it and managed to get over the line. Extending the lead to 28-18 before Jowitt added the 2 to make it 30.

Liam Hood was sin-binned in the 78th for continuous penalties, and despite some good attack from the Devils, it just wasn’t enough to win, Sio did get over in the 80th minute, but some poor kicking from Sneyd cost them this game, he did convert this however after the hooter.
