The Wheelchair Super League returns after a 20-month Covid-enforced absence this weekend – and will break new ground, with live coverage of three of the opening round fixtures on Our League and Twitch.

Leeds Rhinos, Leyland Warriors and North Wales Crusaders are all heading for Preston for one of two triangular series that will launch the 2021 Wheelchair SL campaign.

The action kicks off at 1030am with the Warriors taking on the Crusaders – the first live Wheelchair RL game of the year on Our League, free to all members.

That is followed at midday by a first match of the campaign for the star-studded Leeds Rhinos team, with their game against Crusaders providing a strong taste of what lies ahead in the England versus Wales Mid-Season International at Sheffield in June.

That game will also be exclusive to Our League – and then the action concludes with a War of the Roses, as the Rhinos face the Warriors – and that game will also have the honour of becoming the first Wheelchair RL fixture ever streamed live on Twitch.

Meanwhile on the other side of the Pennines, Wheelchair Super League newcomers Hull FC will host the other triangular series, which also involves the reigning champions Halifax Panthers, and the Argonauts Skeleton Army from Kent.

Martin Coyd OBE, the General Manager of England Wheelchair Rugby League, said: “2021 is a massive year as we continue our preparations for the World Cup, and this is a fantastic boost as more people than ever will be able to watch the action from the first round of the Wheelchair Super League.

“We’ve been waiting so long for the return of the competition, and it’s great that Rugby League lovers will have the chance to watch all three games on Our League, and that streaming on Twitch also gives the Leeds-Leyland match the chance to appeal to a wider and younger audience.”

England will name a revised 16-strong Performance Squad for 2021 on Saturday morning, after national coaches Tom Coyd and Martyn Rothwell assessed performances at last weekend’s season-opening Wheelchair 4s event in Sheffield.
