A last-minute Harry Smith drop-goal helped Wigan Warriors maintain their unbeaten start to the 2022 Betfred Super League season with a 28-29 win against a resilient Toulouse Olympique side in France on Saturday evening.
The Warriors trailed by eight points with eight over an hour of the game played but tries from Liam Marshall and Jai Field, as well as two Zak Hardaker conversions and Smith’s one-pointer, meant Matt Peet’s side came away with the two points in dramatic fashion.
Toulouse had initially fought from behind to lead 18-10 at half-time. Guy Armitage, Maxime Stefani and Tony Gigot all went over in the latter stages of the first half to give the hosts the advantage. Chris Hankinson’s two conversions and drop-goals from Tony Gigot and Eloi Pelissier furthered the French outfit’s lead.
Field had scored the first of this double after just three minutes before a Zak Hardaker effort extended Wigan’s lead to 0-10.

Wigan were first to score after the break via Cade Cust, but Olympique immediately hit back through Matty Russell. A second from Armitage had put Toulouse in control and the newly promoted side looked to be on course for their first-ever Betfred Super League victory.
However, it wasn’t to be as two tries, two conversions and a last-gasp drop-goal meant Wigan continued their perfect start to 2022.
