London might be sitting at the bottom of the Super League ladder but winger Rhys Williams is adamant the Broncos can avoid the drop down out of Super League.
London, who were promoted back to top flight at the end of last year, have only won three of their 14 Super League games so far. The favourites at the start of the season to be relegated, the Broncos have now lost their past eight matches in a row.
But the Danny Ward-coached side have earned some big-name scalps already in 2019 in Wakefield, Wigan and Leeds, and have impressed many with their dogged efforts and structured play.
Williams, who has been with London since 2015, is confident his side can stave off relegation back to the Championship.
“Definitely, if we’d gotten that win over Huddersfield we would have been sitting on eight points along with Hull KR and Leeds right now,” he told Everything Rugby League.
“We’re just one or two wins off being a lot more settled than we are now. The belief is definitely still there.
“If the will wasn’t there I’d be a bit worried. But as you saw in that Wigan game where Luke Yates is making 60-odd tackles and people are flying everywhere and working hard.
“That’s what we’ve tried to build our team up as hungry lads who want to work for each other, who care for each other.”
Williams is back in Super League after a six-year absence. He debuted with Warrington in 2010 and is happy to be back in the elite division.
“It’s been enjoyable but tough,” the Welshman said.
“Getting the wins early on helped with morale and knowing we’re capable of getting wins at this level as a team. The Easter period was tough because we were close in a few of the games and we’ve just not come out the other side.
“Personally, I’m loving being back in Super League. The effort and the will to work go each other is there, it’s just fine-tuning a few little things and being a bit smarter is key at the minute.
“I think more wins will come but it’s just a matter of time. We’ve got a good opportunity against Wakey as they have a few injuries, and Leeds at Magic will be massive for us.”
Williams is London’s top try-scorer this year with seven and also the club’s top metre-maker with 1706, the sixth-most in Super League.
The Wales international is off-contract at the end of this season and says he has not made any decisions on his future yet.
“I’ve loved every minute at the Broncos, this is my fifth year here now and I’ve only missed one game,” he explained.
“We want people here who are going to work hard and I took on that myself so I don’t want to ever miss games and I wanted to do as much as I can for the team.
“Going on to next year, I think that will just fall into place when the time is right. I haven’t made any decisions as of yet.
“I’d like to stay. Ideally we’ll be in Super League next year and it would be an easy decision. Ideally I’d like to stay.
“If we’re not in Super League it might be a different story, but I think where my head’s at at the minute is just working hard for London and off the back of that hopefully the right things fall into place.”
